The Games also would give the Chinese people the chance to witness a new sporting culture that, while not necessarily glamorous, would be unprecedented for any of the ancient Olympics host countries.
"The Olympic spirit has come alive," said Zhang Yiming, the former director of the China Olympic Committee. "At first there were no medals. Now you can even go to the Beijing Games and even win them."
The current IOC president, Thomas Bach, who is in the United States for a United Nations conference, is expected to announce his retirement this week. The Olympics might take the top spot in international sport, but it will be the Chinese president who decides how to best use the venues.
The World Cup's venue, at Beijing's Tiananmen Square, has become a popular tourist destination. And the Beijing Olympic Committee is well aware that the capital will be home to the games starting in 2017, when some of the world's best teams will gather for the biggest sporting event since Beijing.
"The Games will be much bigger than London and Los Angeles," said Li Ligang, the managing director of Beijing's Beijing Expo and Tourism Bureau. "The venue has been built very quickly, and the infrastructure is very solid and ready for the Games."

The bid for the 2024 Summer Games in the South China Sea is also becoming a major concern. Beijing has spent heavily to build a new harbor, and the International Olympic Committee is considering adding the Games to its list of sports to be added to the 2017 agenda.

But there is one particular city that is looking far ahead to the Games, and it may be the host of the next big Asian event in 2020.
Kuala Lumpur, on Malaysia's central coast, is set to host the Olympics in its first Olympics since 1972, with an initial four-day and 10-day festival of sports beginning Nov. 18, at the city's Olympic Village.
